The Ethical Choices of Surrealists

The one significant absence from the exhibition is Salvador Dalí. It was he who cemented in the collective imagination the image of surrealism as a dreamlike vision, a Freudian puzzle presented with almost photographic literalness. We see relatively little of this kind of surrealism in the exhibition “In the Very Bowels of Changes.” For the exhibition’s focus is not on style, nor even on an artistic movement in the strict sense. Rather, it is about a certain attitude.
