Urban Abstraction: Monotype Workshop

 

In the theoretical part, we will examine the works of American painter Julie Mehretu. We will discuss the artist’s innovative techniques. We’ll explore how she translates strong emotions and impressions from specific places and social events onto large-format canvases. We’ll also discover which graphic techniques the artist employed to facilitate her work with very large formats.

In the practical part, we’ll get to work on our own. First, we’ll sketch the outlines of a city with a pencil on paper or create an abstract image of an event that’s important to us. Then, we’ll transform these sketches into monotypes. We will transfer our drawings onto Plexiglas, which we will first cover with oil paint. This will create fanciful, abstract motifs.

Important information: We will be using oil paints during the class. We strongly encourage you to bring a change of clothes or wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
