July 25: Central Square Invoices

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to “Textures of Central Square,” a performative activity and sensory exploration of the city, as part of the new summer series “The Museum Goes to the Square.”

Central Square in Warsaw is a unique spot on the capital’s map, characterized by a rich history, a multitude of meanings, and the presence of tangible traces. During this event, we will stand at the intersection of the monumental, Socialist Realist architecture of the Palace of Culture and Science, relics of pre-war buildings, and the modern, austere infrastructure of the MSN.
During our walk, we’ll treat movement and our very presence in space as a conscious, profound tool for understanding. Instead of merely observing the buildings from a distance, we’ll focus our attention on specific textures, surfaces, and materials. We’ll examine rough stone, smooth metal, rough plaster, and aged concrete.

We’ll use the traditional frottage technique to transfer these textures onto paper. In this way, together we’ll create a unique, tangible archive of Central Square. We will document the physical traces of history and the signs of everyday use that time has permanently etched into the fabric of the city.

Facilitator:
Marcin Matuszewski – educator and creator of performative projects.

Important notes:
We’ll be working outdoors, so please be on time. Be sure to bring water to drink and take appropriate precautions against the sun. In case of rain or bad weather, the event will be moved indoors and held in a modified format.

A new summer series of events at Central Square
The Museum Heads to the Square

Join us for a new summer series of outdoor events at Central Square! On summer Saturday evenings, we’ll transform the space around the new Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw building into a vibrant urban laboratory. Together with the MSN’s education team, we’ll critically analyze public space, explore its functions, and take part in unconventional, artistic activities. We want to spark discussion about how architecture influences our daily lives and social relationships.

Our summer series features two main types of activities:

Themed walks – original, interactive strolls with experts. They’ll allow you to view the Museum’s surroundings from a completely new perspective: social, cultural, political, and historical.

Performative activities – unconventional activities that engage the senses, movement, and the body. They will allow us to redefine how we are present and interact in public space.

More events coming up in August and September!
