The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative workshops for adults accompanying the exhibition “Julie Mehretu. Kairos / Spiritual Variations”.

This event is open to anyone who wants to enjoy a pleasant time at the Museum in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The workshop technique we’ve chosen is perfect for creative expression. You don’t need any artistic experience at all to join in the fun!

What will we be doing?
We’ll start the session by exploring the work of American artist Julie Mehretu. We’ll visit the exhibition to take a close look at the works she’s created over the course of nearly 30 years of her career. What characterizes her art? We’ll find the answer to that question right in the first room!

As we walk through the exhibition, we’ll take a close look at the elements that make up these large-scale compositions. We’ll pay special attention to the creative process itself and the graphic techniques the artist so eagerly experiments with. We’ll view the paintings and discuss what actually inspires artists to create abstract works and how this fact influences our final perception of the art.

After visiting the exhibition, we’ll return to the education room and create our own collages. We’ll draw on a practice that is very close to Julie Mehretu’s heart. We’ll use recycled materials that were once in circulation, created out of the needs of the moment and serving as a direct record of that time. We’ll put old newspapers, posters, photos, brochures, and flyers to work. We’ll cut, crop, arrange, glue, tear, and draw in missing elements. What will emerge from all this? Multi-layered compositions full of intriguing shapes, traces, and entirely new meanings.
