Success in Paint

 

Edward Dwurnik’s paintings—what do they actually bring to mind? Art that perfectly appealed to the general public and flooded the market with bright colors and a multitude of shapes? Or perhaps with art that boldly engaged with social issues and focused on the realities of the Polish People’s Republic era? We’ll begin our workshop by viewing several diverse paintings that the artist created starting in the 1970s.

Together, we’ll reflect on what artistic success really is and how it manifests itself. We’ll discuss how diverse career paths can be, and how we can think about Edward Dwurnik’s own work within this broad context.

In the workshop portion, we’ll create our own compositions symbolizing success. We’ll consider the tastes of an imaginary viewer and then create a painting tailored to them. In doing so, we’ll explore whether a work of art must be the sole vehicle for value, or whether the narrative about it is sufficient on its own. We’ll start with a sketch, which we’ll fill in with oil pastels, and we’ll delight in discovering their vast painterly possibilities.

A workshop ticket grants admission to the exhibition up to 2 hours before the event.
