Paweł Althamer’s films from the MSN collection trace the beginnings of his artistic journey – even before he entered the professional art world and his works gained international recognition. The performances and actions recorded on tape depict a period that is now partly forgotten, yet was crucial in shaping his later practice.
The materials include documentation of activities related to Kowalnia, as well as experiments with the medium itself and explorations of the idea of “camera-less film.”

Some of the recordings may resemble innocent documentation, though many of the situations captured were precisely staged. Together, they create a unique portrait of reality at a turning point – a kind of diary of transformation overlaid with formal experimentation and an exploration of the possibilities of film. It is precisely this duality that sets them apart from typical records of the era.
The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring Paweł Althamer and his son Bruno Neuhamer. The discussion will be moderated by Aniela Trojanowska from the MSN Collections Department.
