Remembering a View of the Future. Videos from the MSN collection

What images do we want to preserve for the future? And what do we see in them when we watch them years later? Remembering a View of the Future is a new film series at KINOMUZEUM, based on films and video works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. We are interested in film as a tool for memory, observation, and artistic experimentation – but also as a way of looking at the present and imagining the future.

The series’ title comes from Wojciech Bąkowski’s film Analysis of Emotions and Irritations 1 and can be seen as an invitation to view images in a particular way: not only as a record of what has already passed, but also as something that can shape our perspective on what is happening today and what is yet to come.

The MSN collection includes films and video materials from the 20th and 21st centuries: experimental and animated works by artists, recordings of performances and happenings, home movies, and productions by Amateur Film Clubs operating at workplaces in the People’s Republic of Poland. Alongside works created within the field of art, the collection also includes images produced outside of art institutions and the professional film circuit. Together, they form an archive where the boundaries between art, documentary, experimentation, and the recording of everyday life blur.

Starting in September, once a month on Sundays at 4:00 p.m., we invite you to screenings combined with meetings with artists whose works are part of the MSN collection. Each installment of the series will be an opportunity to watch and discover the works together, as well as to discuss them – both in historical and contemporary contexts.

In the first installments of the series, we will showcase, among other things, works by Joanna Rajkowska and Robert Yerachmiel Sniderman, documentation of the Akademia Ruchu’s urban actions from 1975–1978, as well as selected materials from Paweł Althamer’s Film Archive. During subsequent sessions, we will revisit materials from the Museum’s collections and juxtapose them with the latest productions and premiere screenings.
