A painting by Martyna Baranowicz in shades of red and pink. It depicts a woman dressed entirely in pink, standing behind a lectern with microphones. The woman, wearing a pink hat, holds a tampon in one hand and carries a bag on her other shoulder containing a small dog wearing an identical hat. The background is a deep red and resembles the Polish Sejm.

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to a painting workshop with artist Martyna Baranowicz. This event is for anyone who wants to explore how art can become a tool for empowerment and a way to tell their own story—regardless of whether they create art on a daily basis.

We will begin our meeting with a guided tour of the exhibition “The Women’s Question 1550–2025.” We will focus on the section of the exhibition titled “Born of a Woman.” There, we will examine works by artists such as Marlene Dumas, Frida Kahlo, and Clarita Haynes. We will see how the themes of pregnancy, motherhood, and reproductive rights become a starting point for an important discussion about freedom and control over the female body.

What will we be doing?
In the workshop portion, we will move on to painting practice. Under the guidance of Martyna Baranowicz, we will reflect on how images shape our identity and how they can challenge social norms and imperatives. We will draw inspiration from the works in the exhibition and the instructor’s experiences to find our own language of expression for the issues that move us.

We’ll use canvases and acrylic paints. Each participant will develop their own painting project and transfer onto the canvas what is important to them at that moment. The workshop will conclude with the creation of a finished painting—your personal manifesto, a form of resistance, or an intimate record of your own experience.
