Playing with Space (Ages 4–6)

During the workshop, we’ll explore how we can use our imagination to boldly change reality. The Surrealists believed that the world around us is not enough, and that art is a wonderful tool for fighting for freedom and a new vision of life. We’ll put that freedom to the test! Together, we’ll explore how to look at objects and shapes to see something completely different in them than what adult reason suggests. We’ll seek answers to these questions through experiments with form, movement, and our own unbridled imagination.

During the creative part, we’ll move to the educational room and completely change the way we perceive objects in our surroundings. Instead of sticking to rigid rules, we’ll embrace chance, rebellion, improvisation, and the free combination of all sorts of ideas!

Defying Gravity: We’ll draw inspiration from Katarzyna Kobro’s “Spatial Composition No. 9.” It’s a sheet-metal sculpture whose shape resembles a leaf in the wind or churning ocean waves. Just like the artist, we’ll open ourselves up to space. We’ll explore how to take a piece of ordinary material and create something that defies gravity, soars into the air, and takes on extraordinary dynamism.

 

Seeing Things Your Own Way: We’ll also draw on the visionary ideas of Władysław Strzemiński. This artist believed that each of us has every right to view the world entirely in our own way and doesn’t have to listen to others. We’ll build spatial forms in which we, from start to finish, set all the rules of the visual game.

 

Piotr Lewandowski – MSN educator, visual artist, and cultural animator. A graduate of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Photography at the University of Arts in Poznań. He works with photography, video, installation, and performance. In his art, he boldly explores themes of movement, space, interpersonal relationships, and queerness.
