Surrealist Theater (ages 4–6)

 

In the first part of the session, we’ll view works by Surrealist artists together, including pieces by Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, among others. We’ll devote a lot of attention to the extraordinary masks the artists designed for the play *King Ubu*. We’ll explore what theater actually is and what a modern performance might look like. Does a play always have to faithfully reflect reality? Can it tell stories that are both true and completely fictional? We’ll talk about Surrealist art and how a performance is created—from the initial idea all the way to the grand production.

In the creative part, we’ll design our own theatrical masks! We’ll draw inspiration from the extraordinary work of the Themersons. We’ll boldly experiment with colors, textures, and a variety of materials. We’ll create completely unconventional forms and discover together what surrealist theater can look like. Our main goal for this session is to work together, have a pleasant conversation about art, and foster creative collaboration.

Active participation by at least one parent or guardian is required for this event.

Agata Andrzejewska – educator at the National Museum in Warsaw (MSN) and the Royal Castle. A student of art history and Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw. She is interested in contemporary art, particularly sculpture and photography. She conducts research in the field of decolonial museology and new materialist theories in art.
