Final layer: screen printing

We will begin the session with a visit to the exhibition. There, we will take a close look at the techniques the artist frequently employs when creating her works. We will explore the meaning of materiality—examining this integral element of her paintings and uncovering the hidden contexts of selected works.

 

We will pay special attention to the “TRANSpaintings” series. This is a unique series of paintings created on an innovative, semi-transparent material. In it, Julie Mehretu uses photographs and media materials that document contemporary wars and conflicts. The artist then boldly modifies and blurs them.

For the hands-on part, we’ll move to the education room, where we’ll create our own photo prints using the acetone transfer technique. This method will allow us to achieve intriguing, blurred, and highly unconventional effects. We’ll use the prints we’ve prepared for you at the Museum, but we strongly encourage you to bring your own favorite photos as well!

Once our works have dried, we will apply another layer and print on them using the screen printing method. The resulting graphics will directly reference the rich body of work by the American artist.

Important information: We will be using acetone during the workshop. This is a chemical with a very strong odor that can irritate the skin and eyes. Please keep this in mind, especially if you are sensitive to strong odors or prone to allergies.
