Polish Radio Experimental Studio at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw: Program of accompanying events
As part of the ongoing reconstruction of the Black Room in 2026, the MSN, in collaboration with Polish Radio, will invite the public to participate in events inspired by the historical legacy of Polish Radio’s Experimental Studio and the contemporary use of equipment and technologies from the 1950s–1970s in electronic music.
On April 13, the program of events will begin with a concert of quadraphonic works (including those by Andrzej Bieżan, Marek Chołoniewski, Krzysztof Knittel, and Eugeniusz Rudnik) created at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. In the coming months, the public will have the opportunity to explore early experiments with multichannel sound in foreign and still-existing electronic music studios (EMS in Stockholm, INA GRM in Paris), where Polish composers (including Elżbieta Sikora and Włodzimierz Kotoński) also worked between 1960 and 1980.
As part of a presentation of contemporary applications of original, analog electronic music instruments, on April 20 we will hear concerts by Aleksandra Słyż (on Moog 35, Synthi VCS 3, and Polymoog synthesizers) and Dutch artist Thomas Ankersmit (playing Serge synthesizers).
In June, the audience will also be able to hear a concert by the duo Yannis Patoukas and Mathijs Leeuwis, who explores the interplay between the analogue studio setting and free improvisation, moving constantly between out-of-time studio work and real-time interactions.
In the fall, the Estonian Electronic Music Society Ensemble (EMA) will visit Warsaw with a concert of works by Estonian electronic music composer Õie Olinda Sacherman (for tape recorders and sine wave oscillators) from the 1950s and 1960s.
There will also be educational workshops on tape sound production and working with modular synthesizers, led by experts in the field. The program of accompanying events also includes screenings of films from the Polish school of animation, with soundtracks produced at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio.
