The artist, wearing a sequined turquoise jumpsuit, stands on a dark stage, holding a large red rose in front of her. Petals are scattered at her feet, and the figure is illuminated by a spotlight.

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops accompanying Nadia Markiewicz's exhibition "Misterioso." This is an invitation to discover the mysterious world of performance art together and see how the artist transforms her experiences into a magical show.

During a walk through the exhibition, we will see unusual costumes, circus props, and films in which the artist levitates or transforms into fairy-tale characters. Together, we will try to answer the following questions:
  • What exactly is performance art? Is it theater, dance, or perhaps a kind of living painting?
  • What role do props play? Can a large top hat, a deck of cards, or wings tell us about what we feel?
  • How does movement change our identity? Can a gesture be a magic trick that changes the way others see us?

We will also look at the concept of misterioso – we will see how to use set design and costumes to create an atmosphere of mystery. We will see how Nadia Markiewicz uses illusion to talk about her disability as something extraordinary, unique, and powerful. We will find out whether art always has to show everything directly, or whether it is sometimes better to hide something to intrigue the viewer.

What will we be doing?
In the workshop part, we will take on the roles of performers and set designers. Using colorful materials and unusual objects, we will create our own mini-performances. We will test how a simple gesture combined with a costume can transform us into someone completely different. There will be plenty of fun with movement and space – we will see how to create our own safe stage, where each of us will become the main character of our own mysterious story.
