A surrealist painting in earthy, dark colors. Against the backdrop of a mountainous landscape featuring a volcano stands a fantastical, hybrid figure of a rider holding a cage with a bird inside. Beside it, on dark water, a bone-like boat with dark sails sails by, filled with mutated, bird-like creatures.

In the mood for some creative rebellion? Come on July 11 between 12:00 and 15:00 to the Auditorium of the Museum of Modern Art for an open collage workshop accompanying the new exhibition “You Are at the Heart of Change. Surrealism and Anti-Fascism”!

The event is open to everyone—we welcome teens, adults, and children under the watchful eye of their parents. Join us at any time. Together, we’ll create collages, put together a giant zine, and play the surrealists’ favorite game!

Instead of learning rigid rules, we’ll use art to take action. The historical Surrealists strongly believed in the slogan “changer la vie”—which simply means “to change life.” They rejected boring rules and looked at the world from a completely new perspective. During our workshop, we’ll do exactly the same thing! We’ll explore the revolutionary side of surrealism, let our rebellious imaginations run wild, and create our own manifestos.

What will we be doing?
Together with artist Bożka Rydlewska, we’ll encourage you to create your own collage manifesto. In the Auditorium space, we’ve set up three main creative stations for you:
  • Your own manifesto: We’ll create collages about issues that are truly important to you. Ecology, social issues, politics—or perhaps pure, humorous fantasy? It’s all up to you!
  • A collective zine: We’ll compile our manifestos into one big zine, which we’ll put together and create as a group during the workshop.
  • A game of “The Exquisite Corpse”: We’ll try out the Surrealists’ most famous parlor game! Each person will draw their own element on a long sheet of paper, without seeing exactly what the person before them drew. In this way, from our collective drawings—right after we unroll the paper scroll—a mysterious figure will emerge: the true Spirit of the New Surrealist Revolution!
