The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

movie and meeting

26.11.2026 19:00
The eccentric artist Louis Wain rose to fame thanks to his extraordinary drawings of cats, which captured the imagination of the British public at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Will Sharp’s film tells the story of his life and work, while also showing how the perception of cats has changed—from animals treated primarily as working animals to full-fledged household companions.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain thus examines not only this extraordinary artist but also the cultural history of our relationship with one of the species closest to us.

After the screening, we’ll discuss Wain’s work, the representation of animals in art, interspecies relationships, and art influenced by cats.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion led by Dr. Patrycja Pichnicka-Trivedi, a collaborator at the Center for Environmental Humanities.
