Stop and Look at the Sculpture (Ages 7–12)

During the event, we will explore the work of Maria Jarema—an artist who, in her paintings, prints, and sculptures, explored movement, the body, and abstract form. Jarema did not always depict the human figure directly. She often did so in a non-obvious way: as a trace of a gesture, a dynamic line, an arrangement of patches, or a rhythm of shapes. Can we describe a silhouette without drawing a face or details? How do we capture movement in a static sculpture?

During a walk through the exhibition, we will search together for the figures the artist has hidden in her sculptures and compositions. We will look at signs, lines, and forms that resemble a gesture, movement, or dance. We will sketch poses, simplify shapes, and transform figures into compositions of lines and colors. We’ll consider whether a painting or sculpture can convey emotions without literally depicting a human figure.

We will devote the second part of the session to sculpture. We will create our own abstract figures inspired by movement and our imagination. We’ll explore how much we can convey about a person without a realistic portrait. We’ll use unconventional sculpting materials and fabrics. Perhaps they’ll result in figurines full of gesture and individual character?

Wanda Woźnicka – an educator who has been collaborating with the Museum of Modern Art for two years, leading a variety of lessons and workshops. A graduate in cultural studies and pedagogy, she is currently studying alternative and arts education at the University of Warsaw. She is particularly interested in new perspectives on the learning process and creative teaching methods.
