Rhythms, Patterns, and Turns (ages 7–12)

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to a family movement workshop centered around the exhibition “Maria Jarema: Cracked Modernism.”

During the session, we’ll explore how to bring the artist’s paintings and sculptures to life. Maria Jarema believed that art is a kind of machine that helps us understand the world. We’ve decided to set that machine in motion! Together, we’ll explore how our bodies can create interesting shapes and set new rhythms. We’ll investigate whether it’s easier to move on our own, or perhaps better to work in pairs or in a large group. We’ll seek answers to these questions through joyful play with space and our own imagination.

In the workshop portion, we’ll completely transform the way we move. To do this, we’ll use special costumes and props inspired by the avant-garde Cricot theater. They’ll help us turn into living, abstract forms! We’ll try out all sorts of arrangements: from solo work, through exercises in pairs, to building large, shared structures.

We’ll cap off our activities by creating one huge, moving sculpture. You don’t need any dance experience to participate in this session. All you need is an open mind, a desire to have fun together, and a willingness to bring different ideas together. Let’s see what you can build together as a family!

Piotr Lewandowski – MSN educator, visual artist, cultural animator. A graduate of Media Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Photography at the University of Arts in Poznań. He works with photography, video, installation, and performance. His art explores themes related to movement, space, interpersonal relationships, and queerness.
