The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to the creative family workshop “Monotypes in Motion,” which accompanies the exhibition “Maria Jarema. Cracked Modernism.”
In the first part of the event, we will explore the work of Maria Jarema—one of the most important Polish artists of the 20th century. Although she was a sculptor by training, her artistic activities spanned many more fields. What topics interested her? What do her works tell us? We will seek answers to these questions during our visit to the exhibition. There, we will see three-dimensional works, gouaches, watercolors, and even extraordinary theatrical costumes.

We will focus most of our attention on the monotypes—these are the artist’s best-known works. They are the result of her creative experiments: they pulsate with color, a wealth of shapes, textures, and layers. Together, we’ll explore what a monotype actually is and how this technique works. We’ll examine the materials the artist used and discuss what it means that she developed her own, recognizable visual language. We’ll combine a close look at the art with short art and movement exercises.
What will we be doing?
In the creative part, we’ll move to the education room and see how monotype works in practice. Each person will create their own unique prints. It’s time for free experimentation! We’ll draw lines, build dynamic rhythms with them, play with color, and layer various shapes on top of each other. Just like Maria Jarema, we’ll allow ourselves creative freedom and see what emerges from the combination of our imagination and artistic chance.
Important information: We will be using paint during the workshop! For this reason, we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, or bringing a change of clothes with you.

Facilitator’s biography:
Paula Kuch-Krawiec – educator at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Graphic designer and illustrator. A graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. She also completed the Pedagogical Studies program at the Faculty of Visual Culture Management at the Academy of Fine Arts. Collaborating with cultural institutions, she leads various types of workshops for children, teenagers, and adults.
