Looking for a Loophole (Ages 7–12)

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to a creative family workshop titled “Looking for a Hole in the Circus.” The event accompanies the exhibition “Maria Jarema. Cracked Modernism.” Our meeting is inspired by the play *Circus* by the Cricot 2 theater, in which the costumes designed by Maria Jarema played a huge role.

During the workshop, we’ll take a look at various theatrical “holes” together. We’ll explore why umbrellas with holes, openings in the stage, and hands and heads poking through fabric became the main inspiration for the aforementioned performance. We’ll discover how a simple “hole” can wonderfully stimulate the theatrical imagination!

During our visit to the exhibition, we’ll take a close look at Maria Jarema’s original costumes and pay special attention to their unusual, “holey” form. Then we’ll move to the education room. There, we’ll do some simple movement exercises and explore working with our own bodies, materials, and space.

To conclude, we’ll create a short performance together, drawing inspiration from the motifs we explored earlier. We’ll use a single-color, holey fabric for this. It will serve as both an original costume and a wonderful, movable set!

Tomasz Krajewski – educator at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, city guide, and theater educator. He collaborates with the State Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw. Previously associated with the City Laboratory of the Museum of Warsaw, where he researched and promoted the capital’s intangible heritage. A graduate in theater studies and history. Author of educational film projects. He is interested in art in urban spaces, the Vistula River, and ceramics.
