Is this abstract? (Ages 7–12)

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops accompanying the exhibition “Maria Jarema: Cracked Modernism”.

In the first part of our meeting, we will view the artist’s works together and focus on her abstract compositions. But are they really abstract? We will examine her famous monotypes up close and pay attention to the shapes hidden within these works. Together, we’ll try to determine what abstraction actually is, and what synthesis is. We’ll consider how colors and forms can build entire images. We’ll also talk about different types of compositions and learn how a collage is created in practice.

For the creative part, we’ll move to the art room, where we’ll design our own collages. The work of Maria Jarema will serve as our main inspiration. We’ll boldly experiment with a wide variety of materials and colors. We’ll explore how to create an image that doesn’t depict any specific objects or figures from the real world. What will ultimately emerge from our efforts—pure abstraction or perhaps an artistic synthesis?

Our main goal is joyful, collaborative activity, intergenerational conversation about art, and fostering creative cooperation within the family.

At least one guardian must participate in the event.

Agata Andrzejewska – educator at the National Museum in Warsaw and the Royal Castle. Student of art history and Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw. She is interested in contemporary art, particularly sculpture and photography. She conducts research in the field of decolonial museology and new materialist theories in art.
