The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops accompanying the exhibition “Maria Jarema: Cracked Modernism”.
The human figure played an extremely important role in Maria Jarema’s work. Although at first glance it is difficult to discern specific figures in her abstract works, they are truly there! During our meeting, we will take on the role of detectives and head to the exhibition together to find the masked characters. We’ll check whether a given shape resembles an angular head, or perhaps hides very long legs. We’ll also reflect on the mask itself—what role it plays in culture, what it helps us hide, and what it allows us to boldly express.
What will we do?
In the 1930s, Maria Jarema collaborated with the experimental Cricot Theater. She created extraordinary sets, costumes, and puppets for it. It is precisely in this theatrical realm that we will seek our main inspirations.
In the workshop portion, we’ll get to work and create our own original masks. We’ll use colorful paper, tissue paper, and fabric scraps. With these materials, every participant will create a unique piece and embody their own brand-new artistic alter ego!
Biography of the facilitator:
Mikołaj Brzozowski – MSN educator and one half of the osesi collective. He brings literature to life and eagerly collaborates with diverse local communities. He co-edited the publication “Poetry to Feel. A Collection of Poems and Exercises”—a unique volume of poems and a toolkit for animation work using contemporary poetry. He studies cultural studies at the University of Warsaw.
