Far and Near (Ages 4–6)

In his work, Edward Dwurnik typically depicted people as part of a larger whole. This is evident in his 1974 piece “Bus Stop,” which shows a group of people. Together, they are waiting for a bus. Each of them is different, but together they create a distinctive picture of everyday life and urban community. During the workshop, we’ll reflect on what makes a few people a community, and we’ll consider the role that a “group portrait”—an image that depicts many people at once rather than a single individual—can play.

The activities at the exhibition will be based on mindfulness exercises. We’ll count the figures in selected paintings and look for similarities and differences among them. In the second part of the session, we’ll work together to create a collective portrait of our workshop group. We’ll draw inspiration from Dwurnik’s unique artistic practice, in which he moved beyond two-dimensional paintings and began creating three-dimensional heads!

 

A workshop ticket grants admission to the exhibition for up to 3 hours after the workshop begins.
