Event as part of the 14th Culture Without Barriers Festival
“Zaczyn” is an abstract word that refers to the beginning of bread. It is that unique moment when wild yeast, like a spark, falls onto the flour and transforms it into a living dough. The sourdough starter we’ll be working with holds the memory of many generations and places. It comes from the Białystok region, where homemakers—including the artist’s mother—have passed it down from one to another for nearly a century. This extraordinary substance carries within it the microclimate of the Knyszyn Forest, and its physical trace is a delicate, fruity aroma. This aroma is the work of wild yeast, which originated in a marsh within a forest reserve. It was from there that, years ago, a handful of wild berries found their way into a jar of sourdough starter.
During the workshop, we’ll learn simple methods for making bread at home. Each participant will prepare their own sourdough loaf and take it home to bake in their own oven. As a gift, we’ll also give you a jar of sourdough starter and special instructions. This natural leaven will allow you to bake as much bread as you like at home. We welcome both groups and individuals!
Because in culture (and in the kitchen!), there’s no single “right” recipe. YOU CAN DO IT THIS WAY! AND YOU CAN DO IT THAT WAY, TOO!
Accessibility and Practical Information
We meet at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, which is fully accessible to people with diverse needs. We’ll be working in a spacious room on the ground floor. For us, accessibility is a natural part of experiencing culture, which is why:
Need a moment to catch your breath or some privacy? Right next to the room is a cozy space that also serves as a family room and a quiet retreat.
Does the noise bother you? No problem—you can borrow noise-canceling headphones at the museum reception desk at any time.
To make sure everything goes smoothly, we’ve prepared the bread recipe for you in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format (ETR).
See you at the communal table!
