On the occasion of the exhibition The Woman Question 1550–2025, MSN Warsaw invites you to a public discussion devoted to the ongoing project of rediscovering women artists. Moderated by Alison Gingeras, the conversation brings together three scholars and curators—Dorota Jarecka, Anke Kempkes, and Matylda Taszycka—who will share concrete examples from their research, exhibitions, and curatorial practice.
The discussion situates “rediscovery” not as a recent corrective, but as a process intrinsic to feminist art history since its emergence as a methodology in the 1970s. From its beginnings, feminist scholarship has challenged the structures that produced historical absence, asking why women artists have been repeatedly forgotten, marginalized, or rendered invisible—and why their recovery often needs to be undertaken repeatedly. The event will reflect on the political, institutional, and epistemological stakes of this work today, and on what it means to rethink art history not as a closed canon, but as a field in continual revision.
