Newsreel screening and discussion
Following the screening, there will be a conversation between Michał Oleszczyk and Marta Madejska, a community archivist, researcher, reporter, and author of the books *Aleja Włókniarek* and *Ostatni gasi światło. Przypowieści o transformacji*.
The 1990s are unfolding before our eyes, and along with its many promises, a wave of strikes is also sweeping the country.
During this evening, we will see, among other things, the railway workers’ warning strike from February 1992, the sit-in strike at the Ministry of Agriculture building, as well as the massive “Solidarity” demonstration in front of the Belvedere Palace, featuring a dramatic appeal for social calm by Lech Wałęsa (by then President of Poland). The culmination of this collection – during which we will also see “PKF” switch to Fuji color film, bringing the image of Poland’s transformation to life – will be an issue of “PKF” entirely devoted to the longest wage strike in post-war Poland, namely the protests at the Small Car Factory in Tychy, which began symbolically on July 22 (the former anniversary of the July Manifesto) and ended on September 16.
During the evening, we will also see a picture of the collapse of Łódź, the former “Promised Land,” left to fend for itself, as well as the protests at the former Huta Warszawa steelworks. Is it really the case, as the evening’s final chronicle suggests, that social justice in the new Poland can now only take the form of a “charity ball” organized once in a while…?
