Newsreel screening and discussion
Following the screening, there will be a conversation between Michał Oleszczyk and Marta Madejska, a community archivist, researcher, reporter, and author of the books *Aleja Włókniarek* and *Ostatni gasi światło. Przypowieści o transformacji*.
The Round Table talks symbolically open this collection of “Polish Film Chronicles” from 1989–1991, whose segments are devoted to both the dynamic changes in the consumer market and the growing wave of strikes.
The early protests at the “Bełchatów” Lignite Mine serve as a prelude to later strikes by public transportation workers (including in Piotrków Trybunalski and Płock), as well as at numerous workplaces (including in Sierpc). We will see, among others, striking railway workers from Słupsk and Wałbrzych, as well as negotiations with Lech Wałęsa (before he became president).

Against the backdrop of these dramatic events, we will see rising foreign imports, the privatization of the housing market, as well as
the birth of Janusz Józefowicz’s “Metro” – the first Polish stage musical “on par with Broadway,” whose energy embodies the dream of Western prosperity that permeated the era of Poland’s transition.
