The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites teachers to a premiere guided tour of the exhibitions by Maria Jarema and Julie Mehretu, as well as a presentation of the educational program. The event is an opportunity to explore the new exhibitions and the offerings prepared for school groups.
About the Exhibitions
Maria Jarema. Cracked Modernism The exhibition presents the work of the sculptor, painter, and co-founder of the Krakow Group. The exhibition showcases her interdisciplinary work—from painting and sculpture to costume and set designs for the Cricot Theater. The artist’s works, based on rhythmic shapes and vibrating structures, serve as a starting point for reflection on creative freedom and the relationship between the individual and the collective.
Julie Mehretu: Kairos / Spiritual Variations A presentation of works by one of the most important contemporary artists, who combines abstraction with an analysis of historical and social processes in her monumental, multi-layered paintings. By superimposing city plans, maps, and expressive gestures, Mehretu creates visual narratives about migration and conflict, requiring the viewer to carefully decipher hidden meanings.
Educational program and workshops for schools Our exhibition-related activities always combine active exploration with creative activities in the education rooms. During the meeting, we will discuss methods for working with different age groups: The youngest (preschoolers): Children learn basic concepts related to abstraction by exploring shapes and colors in Jarema’s paintings and searching for visual traces of presence on Mehretu’s canvases. Grades 1–3: We focus on experimentation and gesture. Students will learn the monotype technique and explore how different drawing tools can convey emotions and the architecture of a building. Grades 4–8: We will focus on the diversity of media and the creation of “maps without legends.” Students will collect visual motifs in inspiration journals to create layered compositions combining cartography with expression. Secondary schools: Students will explore the biographies and creative methods of the artists.
In the visual arts segment, students will create original compositions (monotypes or collages based on maps and photographs) that will allow them to learn how to translate personal experiences and global issues into the language of symbols and artistic gestures.
Biographies of the instructors: Karolina Jabłońska – MSN educator, art history student at the University of Warsaw. She leads exhibition tours, classes for children and youth, and workshops. Her work is inspired by the practice of storytelling and conversations with objects—asking them questions and then searching for answers together.
