A film fairy tale about inter-species solidarity, entirely animated, entirely free of human speech, and totally devoted to animals: a cat, a Labrador, a secretary, a capybara, and a lemur, who will somehow remain in my memory as the most vivid and nuanced characters of 2025.
Produced using provocatively widely available technology (and costing a fraction of Pixar's budgets), Flow is not only an Oscar-winning triumph for Latvian filmmaker Gints Zibalodis, but also the most capacious allegory that cinema could muster in a period of unrelenting conflict and irreconcilable divisions.
At the end of this story about a group of survivors learning to cooperate and open up to new things, we may feel like we are five years old again – and cinema has only just begun.
