Every year seems to have one surprise film that jumps into the repertoire mid-season and suddenly sets movie-loving social media ablaze.
Last year it was Strange Darling, and this year it's The Disappearances — an elaborate narrative puzzle in which successive twists and turns slowly come together to form a metaphysical comedy-horror about how a child feels when a parent is mentally absent.
It's really impossible to say anything more about the plot without starting a chain of spoilers — so I'll just add that it all begins with the mystery of the disappearance of a group of local kids and ends with a macabre scene that Sam Raimi himself would be proud of. For dessert, we get Amy Madigan, who is unrecognizable at first glance and who, in my opinion, can easily expect an Oscar nomination for her supporting role.
This is a horror classic worthy of our decade!
