Who cares?
In Spanish cinema, the 1980s were a time of rapid transformation – after decades of Franco’s dictatorship and moral censorship, a generation of young filmmakers, hailing from Madrid’s counterculture, came to the fore. The patriotic fervor and pastoral family stories that had dominated the screen gave way to gritty depictions of modern urban life, and the cultural definition of what it means to be Spanish was shaken to its core.
Pedro Almodóvar remains the most recognizable figure of that period to this day. It was amid the frenzy of the movida that his inimitable style took shape – provocative, campy, and charged with punk energy.
His work serves as a lens through which the most important themes of that decade are reflected – a break with the conservative past, the emancipation of women and queer people, the bold portrayal of sexuality and non-conformity, and above all, a radical acceptance of individualism.
In Almodóvar’s world, there is no room for conforming to rules imposed by society. As Alaska, one of the key figures of the movida music scene, sang:

On summer Saturday evenings, we invite you to immerse yourself in 1980s Madrid during screenings of six films by the director – from his rebellious, underground debut to the mature works from the end of the decade, in which he found his full voice.
