Matador

Diego, a retired matador, cannot come to terms with the loss of his former physical prowess. María, a successful lawyer, harbors a fascination with death and violence. When their paths cross, a dangerous bond forms between them, one in which desire and destruction prove inseparable. Around this relationship, Almodóvar weaves a dense web of obsessions, lies, and crimes, leading the characters toward an inevitable catastrophe.

Matador is one of the first films in which Pedro Almodóvar moves away from the anarchic energy of his early work and heads toward a darker, more sensual style of cinema. Drawing on Hitchcock’s thrillers, the giallo aesthetic, and the tradition of Spanish bullfighting, he creates a story of passion that transcends the bounds of reason. It is here that one of the most important themes of his work is fully explored for the first time: the dangerous relationship between love, desire, and death.
