A Museum for Teachers

Exhibition “Black Paths Enter the White Land” is an attempt to examine Poland’s relationship with Blackness and Sub-Saharan Africa during its membership in the Eastern Bloc from 1945 to 1989. The exhibition revives the memory of stories that were marginalized after the political transformation and showcases their influence on the art and visual culture of that era.

During the guided tour, we will explore together how the processes of decolonization, propaganda, and visits by African students shaped contemporary perceptions of Africa. The exhibition’s curator, Oliwia Bosomtwe, will help us examine Polish stereotypes about Blackness and contrast them with historical facts.

 

This session will provide teachers with a ready-made context for leading important lessons with young people on history, racism, and intercultural relations.

 

Oliwia Bosomtwe — author of the book *Like a White Man: A Story About Poles and Others* (W.A.B., 2024), which explores Polish perceptions of Blackness and the experiences of Black Poles, and has been featured in exhibitions in New York, Brussels, and Metz. She is interested in the history of Polish relations with Blackness and Sub-Saharan Africa. She writes articles, leads discussions, and occasionally curates exhibitions. She is a graduate of the interdepartmental individualized humanities program at the University of Warsaw (UW). She is working on her Ph.D. in sociology at SWPS University. She is the former editor-in-chief of the Noizz.pl website. She contributes to publications such as the monthly magazine “Znak.”
