Does history always have to be “grand”? Edward Dwurnik taught us that the most interesting stories are hidden in everyday life. In this workshop, students will become active observers of reality. We’ll draw on the view from the window and the inspiration we find in paintings to create drawings that accurately document the life unfolding around us. From many small close-ups of everyday situations, we’ll work together to create a large-format group portrait. In this way, we’ll discover that history isn’t just dates from a textbook, but also the fascinating everyday world.
EDWARD DWURNIK. PRIDE AND SHAME
Edward Dwurnik is a painter who, instead of prominent leaders, preferred to portray ordinary people—on their way to work, on the street, or during their leisure time. The exhibition features many of his expressive, sometimes humorous, and sometimes very serious paintings from the 1970s and 1980s (mainly from the famous series “Athletes” and “Workers”). The artist painted the world without embellishment. He depicted fatigue, the struggles of everyday life, but also the emotions referenced in the title: great pride and shame. We’ll also see contemporary paintings by Patryk Różycki, who painted his memories of growing up in the Polish countryside.
