An abstract painting on canvas depicting two large, coral-colored, organic forms (like flames) floating above a chaotic tangle of red, geometric beams. The background features a contrast between a dark navy-blue sky and a light, cream-colored background. The texture of the canvas is visible.

What are we going to do?

The Museum of Modern Art invites you to “Other Flowers”—workshops for adults inspired by the exhibition “You Are at the Heart of Change: Surrealism and Anti-Fascism.”

During the session, we’ll learn about selected Surrealists and examine their approaches to depicting nature. Max Ernst will be a particularly important figure for us. We’ll begin our workshop with a short guided tour. In the exhibition, we’ll look for works in which nature takes center stage. We’ll learn how the Surrealists went beyond traditional ways of composing landscapes and still lifes. Careful observation will serve as our starting point for a discussion on style and form. Together, we’ll consider whether artists who completely omitted human figures from their paintings were still able to infuse their canvases with the “surrealist spirit.”

In the second part of the session, we’ll move to the education room. There, we’ll create individual paintings and drawings using the grattage technique, which was popularized by the Surrealists. It’s an extraordinary technique that, in addition to producing interesting visual effects, offers a very enjoyable and free-spirited creative process. It involves a significant element of surprise, making it an excellent escape from everyday life, perfectionism, and the need for control.
We’ll try to create our own surrealist flowers. We’ll wrap up the workshop with a small group exhibition and a discussion of the resulting works.
The class is suitable for people of absolutely any skill level!
