The life and work of an artist whose pieces are held in museums around the world. The film follows Julie Mehretu’s preparations for a retrospective co-organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (November 2019–September 2020) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (March–August 2021). It showcases the exhibition at LACMA, which features 36 paintings and 41 works on paper, representing over two decades of her work—from her graduation projects at RISD (1996–1997) to her current large-scale, multi-layered canvases.
In the film, Mehretu herself discusses her works, explaining her creative process and the chronology of her career.
Many of her friends and colleagues from the art world also share their memories of the artist.
