The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops accompanying its latest exhibition, “Sculpture Beyond the Solid”
For a very long time, it was believed that sculptures had to be heavy, stable, and immobile. Contemporary art, however, shows that a form doesn’t have to have just one fixed shape! At the exhibition “Sculpture Beyond Stability,” we’ll see works that defy gravity, balance, and even drift. During this family workshop, we’ll explore how to stay upright and what happens when a sculpture loses its balance. We’ll reflect on how we can support one another and how to become living scaffolds and supports. We’ll use our own bodies to test the force of gravity and explore how weight interacts with space.
What will we be doing?
We’ll start the session with a movement warm-up, during which we’ll explore the limits of our balance. Then we’ll head to the exhibition halls to seek inspiration in the role of gravity in art. There, we’ll see objects that hang and sculptures that seem to function on the very edge of balance. We’ll take a close look at structures that use various types of supports, as well as works that drift freely and float in space. Together, we’ll ponder what actually sustains a form, allowing it to endure and escape the force of gravity.
Finally, we’ll take our observations and movement experiments to the education room. We’ll use unconventional materials and, through joyful collaboration, create our own temporary sculptures. Instead of building traditional structures, we’ll focus on supporting them, connecting them, and leaning them against one another. We’ll also see how long we can keep them upright. Join us for a fantastic adventure where movement meets sculpture!
