We invite you to a screening of the film Distant Voices, Still Lives as part of the Down & Dirty series. British cinema of the 1980s.

A family chronicle, a musical, a film about domestic violence, the most accurate cinematic recording of a dream in which our condensed childhood returns to us... Distant Voices, Still Lives is the first feature film in the career of Terence Davies, born in Liverpool in 1945, the son of a large Catholic family living in the shadow of a violent father.
While in his debut trilogy of short films (Children, Madonna with Child, Death and Transfiguration) Davies dealt with the sense of alienation he felt as a homosexual boy, in Distant Voices... he created a unique imagined chronicle of the lives of his older siblings before Terence was born.
The result is one of the most beautiful films of all time—devoid of a linear plot, pulsating with the power of successive waves of memories, a chronicle of intimate memories in which a working-class family tries to survive a cycle of violence despite their tears, often with a song on their lips.
