Crazy Moms
Movies are full of mothers. Warm, caring, self-sacrificing, the best under the sun... but also crazy, overprotective, eccentric, and possessive. “A boy’s best friend is his mother,” as... serial killer Norman Bates used to say in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
In this summer film series, we present three encounters with extreme motherhood: Bellissima (1951), directed by Luchino Visconti, features a mother obsessed with her child’s success; Serial Mom ( 1994) by John Waters features a mother so perfect she’s downright deadly – and finally, The Dead Mother (1993), a forgotten gem of Spanish Baroque cinema, presents a vision of a mother whose presence radiates from beyond the grave. This summer, choose screenings featuring crazy mamas... and be sure to bring your mom!
The series is curated by Michał Oleszczyk, a lecturer at the Faculty of Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw and creator of the SpoilerMaster podcast. He will lead discussions following the screenings.
