A woman's face in the twilight
Texas, somewhere at the end of the world. Bar owner Julian Marty discovers that his wife, Abby (Frances McDormand), is cheating on him with one of his employees. Instead of a scene of jealousy, he opts for a systematic solution: he hires private investigator Vissér (M. Emmet Walsh) – a sweaty cynic in a cowboy hat – to kill the lovers. From that moment on, everything goes wrong: each character knows less than they think, everyone acts on false assumptions, and every subsequent move deepens the disaster. The title doesn’t – lie killing is deadly simple. Cleaning up after the murder: that’s the real problem.

Blood Simple is the Coen brothers’ debut – and one of the most dazzling debuts in the history of American cinema. Joel and Ethan, then brothers in their twenties from Minnesota, financed the film with money raised by going door-to-door to investors with a 16mm reel of promotional footage – and then shot a neo-noir film so formally assured, it was as if they’d been making movies for decades.

Everything the world would come to love about the Coens is already here in full: crime as a comedy of errors in which no one communicates with anyone else, black humor seeping from every crack, masterful handling of point of view, and the conviction that the universe is a mechanism precisely calibrated for malice.

Barry Sonnenfeld (the future director of Men in Black) was behind the camera, and his camera movements have become the stuff of cinematography textbooks.
This is also the debut of Frances McDormand, the future three-time Oscar winner and wife of Joel Coen, but the true master of the film is M. Emmet Walsh, whose cackling Vissér is one of the greatest scoundrels in the history of the genre.

The restored 4K copy allows you to appreciate every neon sign, every drop of sweat, and every streak of light in the finale, which to this day serves as a masterclass in building tension.
