Contemporary Culture Heritage WARSAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION 5
“Contemporary Culture Heritage” [Polish abbreviation “DKW”] is a formal term for those items of cultural heritage which – mainly due to the time of their creation – do not fall within the definition of the “monument”, and therefore may be protected only under the provisions of the Act on Spatial Planning and Development.
The initiative and the scope of such protection is primarily within the competence of the local government, however, local architects (and urban planners) can play a key role in this regard. This is a challenge, not only because of the expertise in this area, attributed to these occupational groups, but also because of the role they have already played in establishing the general regulations for this sector and initiating measures for the protection of Warsaw DKW. The lecture will focus on the criteria for qualifying as DKW, the manner and extent of their protection in Warsaw, as well as issues and challenges related thereto.
