The Ukrainian part of the WARSAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION festival program was carried out in Kyiv. The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Museum of Warsaw invite you to a presentation of Kyiv events by the collective of the Visual Culture Research Center, as well as a discussion and a film screening.

The Kyiv part of the festival focused on urban research and intervention in marginalized and forgotten routes of collective cohabitation in the city. It is located on an abandoned street that once connected the historic section of the upper town, Lvivska Square, with the factory and worker housing district of the Hlybochytsa River Valley. This route fell into oblivion with the collapse of the Soviet Union and became a spot of unrealized development dreams, urban fauna, and a garage cooperative hosting a small creative community of graffiti writers, musicians and artists.

The festival program has reclaimed the site for public use, providing a discursive space for collaboration between artists, scholars and urban activists, involving site-specific work, film screenings, and workshops.

The presentation of the Kyiv program will be accompanied by a discussion about interventions in semi-public spaces with Tomasz Świetlik, and a screening of Oleksyi Radynski's film, Landslide (2016).

The film is a story about an attempt to build “a society, which will be radically different from everything else that surrounds us” (to quote the film’s protagonists). This process is taking place in the very center of Kyiv, in the area reclaimed by the forces of nature, where landslide, degradation of urban politics and desintegration of social ties have led artists and activists to create an anarchic, uncontrolled enclave. This is how the idea of “utopia, here and now” was born. Representatives of street art, music scene and theater avant-garde take part in the process of creating this utopian place.
