The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Museum of Warsaw welcome guests to the opening of the exhibition of the 10th edition of the WARSAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION festival, taking place in the former Cepelia pavilion at the intersection of ul. Marszałkowska Street and Al. Jerozolimskie in the city centre.

The "Neighbours" exhibition seeks reflections on the notion of neighbours in general and the relations between Warsaw and Kyiv in particular. The curators from the Kyiv collective Visual Culture Research Centre strive to capture the image of today’s Polish-Ukrainian relations and to reveal the diverse meanings forming around the theme of the neighbour. They treat the relations between the cities as one possible point of departure for understanding broader global processes such as migration, the escalation of nationalist attitudes, and conflicts of identity.

The festival exhibition attempts to examine the notion of neighbourhood from the viewpoint of migrants, workers and other residents of Warsaw coming from beyond the eastern border. Their experience is expressed in the artistic works constituting the main medium of this year’s edition of the WARSAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION festival. To stress the neighbourly dimension of the festival, a series of accompanying events have also been held in Kyiv, under the shared motto “Urbanism in a state of emergency.”

However, the exhibition in Warsaw may be read as a voice on the diverse artistic attitudes in Ukraine (and the artists referring to it). The art there creates real-time images of social processes generated by disillusion with the current situation: the hybrid conflict with Russia, as well as the policy of decommunization and appropriation of public space by radical nationalist movements. The latter phenomena, which are also present in Poland, will be examined in a broader perspective.

The exhibition also raises issues from the collective experience of every European: migrations driven by armed conflict and the situation of immigrants on the labour market, as well as the battle for historical memory, tied to politics and social transformations, and the fight over public space. The installations, drawings and videos presenting these topics will be shown in the post-war modernist building that was once entirely devoted to the Cepelia pavilion—and thus the reference to the difficult heritage of socialist modernism present in both countries will be equally relevant.

After the vernissage, we invite you to the opening party "Will you be my neighbour?" at barStudio, plac Defilad 1, 9:30 pm.
