"Los Angeles Plays Itself", directed by Thom Andersen, USA, 2003
"Los Angeles Plays Itself" is a mirror, in which the most vain city in the world can look at itself. The video essay, edited by the artists Thom Andersen, explores the wide spectrum of visual codes in which the "City of Angels" is being presented. Andersen points out that LA is being both - the main character and a background for movie scenes.
From this collage emerges an image of a fascinating hybrid, far from the one-dimensional model known from "Chinatown", "Blade Runner" or "Rebel Without a Cause". Andersen's film is a true treat, during which the viewer can enjoy references to over a hundred of movies - from Hollywood classic, over film noir to pornography.
