VERTICAL EXHIBITION

The Cynics Republic – Plac Defilad

Marcus Geiger, no title, 2017

The show involves a vertical installation built inside the Museum’s monumental staircase. The scaffold tower features video work from the archives of the Kontakt Collection in Vienna and MSN’s Filmoteka. Visitors walking up and down the stairs become the unwitting participants in a performance that evolves before their eyes. The exhibition will be accompanied by film screenings at the Cinema and live performances around the Museum.

The installation refers to the concept of the disciplinary society, as described by Michel Foucault in his book "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison". Written shortly after his stay near the Palace of Culture in Poland in 1958, the work examines the internalization of norms and social rules, using panoptic architecture as a metaphor for disciplinary power—a model epitomized by the Palace, which was gifted to Warsaw by Stalin under the Communist regime.
