CURATED BY

Sebastian Cichocki, Helena Czernecka

Primary Forms is a recurring educational and artistic programme carried out by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the The EFC Foundation. Since 2021, a wide array of artworks – instruction manuals, games, music scores and objects used in schools, community centres, and libraries across Poland – have been created as part of the programme.

More than thirty artists from all over the world have taken part in the project. Their artworks, in architect-designed boxes, are mostly distributed to primary schools. There, exhibitions are created, and selected artworks become part of school furnishings or teaching aids. Sometimes, they redefine the school’s codes of conduct or form the basis for activities and performances. The school functions as a museum.

In 2024, the previous trajectory of our actions is reversed. Interpreted by children, artworks are placed in a new “box,” i.e., the new building of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. In this way, the museum is transformed into a school.
