In this talk, Éric de Chassey, art historian and co-curator of the Maria Jarema exhibition at MSN, will share his experience of years of preparation for the show — from the extensive research of the artist’s oeuvre to the new ideas and insights that appeared only during the installation of the works in the space.
In the words of Éric de Chassey:
The preparation of the Maria Jarema exhibition at MSN spread over several years. It required reading everything that had been published on the subject, delving into archives, speaking and sharing insights with scholars, seeing the works of the artist one by one, as extensively as possible. So much so that when the exhibition came, I might have thought that I knew and understood everything about Jarema. But what happened is exactly the contrary. Seeing Jarema's works together, seeing them with the works of other artists, seeing them in the company of documentary and archival material; all that has brought new questions and new insights, making us change some aspects of the exhibition while installing it, suggesting other possibilities once it was installed. This is the experience I propose to share with the public.
Éric de Chassey is director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris and professor of modern and contemporary art history at the École normale supérieure in Lyon.
He was director of the French National Institute of Art History (2016–25) and the French Academy in Rome—Villa Medici (2009–15). He has published extensively on the work of Henri Matisse, US and European art, transatlantic cultural relationships, and visual culture of the second half of the twentieth century, especially in relation to counterculture and politics.
He has curated numerous exhibitions in France, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, and Poland (Andrzej Wróblewski: Recto / Verso 1948–1949, 1956–1957 at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw in 2015, with Marta Dziewańska). A Polish translation of his latest book Donner à voir (Gallimard, 2024), on images of Birkenau from the Sonderkommando to Gerhard Richter, which won the Prix Pierre Daix, is forthcoming.
