The winner of the Venice Film Festival, In the Next Room, is brought to the screen with two major personalities and film stars: Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. Pedro Almodóvar’s melodrama is presented as an emotional tale about farewells, fulfillment, motherhood, and chosen family, and above all – about living life on one’s own terms. A completely new chapter in his career is opened by the Spanish director’s English-language debut, while his trademark humor, melancholy, and seductive splendor in costumes and interiors are retained. The explosion of vibrant colors is used to celebrate life in both its joyful and bittersweet forms, and a tribute is paid to friendship, whose glow softens every pain.
The story of In the Next Room is set on the East Coast of the United States. In New York, two old friends are reunited: Ingrid (Moore), a successful writer, and Martha (Swinton), a war correspondent who is currently fighting the most important battle of her life. They were separated by professional and personal choices, but fate – which cannot be chosen – causes them to meet again. In dramatic circumstances, a chance is seen by Ingrid and Martha to experience something together once more.
One of the most highly praised films by Pedro Almodóvar, In the Next Room is an adaptation of The Friend, a novel by Sigrid Nunez. This therapeutic, hopeful film is unafraid to bring tears and believes in the healing power of presence and relationships that withstand the test of time
