The Lovers on the Bridge

One of the most intense love stories in 1990s cinema. The Lovers on the Bridge is the story of Alex, a homeless outsider, and Michèle, an artist fleeing her progressive loss of sight and her former bourgeois life. Their refuge is a closed Parisian bridge, a space suspended between the city and the river, between safety and ruin.

 

Leos Carax's film is a manifesto of extreme emotions: carnal, excessive, pulsating with movement and music. The director constructs the film like a poem: raw images of the street give way to operatic rapture, dance, fireworks, and immersion in water, while love balances between euphoria and self-destruction.
