About to get married, Agnes (Anja Plaschg) receives a gift—a severed finger amulet, meant to help her conceive. However, the young couple's life does not go as planned, and Agnes, trusting and open to the beauty of the surrounding nature, becomes increasingly out of place in the new society. Deeply religious, she finds herself struggling to fit in.
The latest work by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, known for Goodnight Mommy and The Lodge, is a historical film based on research by Kathy Stuart, depicting the realities of women's lives in our part of Europe. Like their previous films, The Devil's Bath draws from the horror genre, without fully revealing what it's about. The directing duo consistently builds a suffocating atmosphere, where it is difficult to resist the existential fear of the invisible.
The film was awarded the Silver Bear for an Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
TW: depression, suicide, violence.
The film is screened with Polish and English subtitles.
