The story of the relationship between two divers, Enzo Molinari (Jean Reno) and Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr), and his girlfriend Johanna Baker (Rosanna Arquette) is a journey into the depths of the sea – and into the depths of the human soul.
Filmed on several continents, Besson's spectacle contains perhaps the most beautiful underwater scenes in the history of cinema. This seductive, sensual tale begins in the 1950s and flows into the present day with a changing current: from the tension and risk of diving without tanks to the delight of the sublimity of the underwater world.
The Big Blue, based on the biographies of real freediving pioneers, is suspended between the blue abyss and the sun-scorched surface where ordinary human affairs take place. Mayol, the film's main character, wants to escape from the ordinary: he is half-man, half-dolphin, who feels most at home in the sea in the company of animals.
